1. Specialize in One Area
There are different areas of cyber security positions. If you specialize in one area, however, this will give you more of an opportunity to move up in your field, as well as to obtain positions in other companies, if you desire. Some areas that you can specialize in include network security, hacker security, as well as operations analyst security. Becoming a specialist shows your current employer, as well as future potential employers, that you are an expert in that field. This will put you in front of other cyber security professionals that do not specialize in one area.
You can also specialize in more than one area if you prefer. This will open many more doors for you.
2. Get the Right Certifications
Once you decide the field you want to work in, you need to make sure you have a variety of certifications. There are many certifications you can get that will show your current employer you have more skills to offer them. This will also increase your chances of moving up in your career. This is especially beneficial if you are not satisfied in your current position.
If you currently do not have any certifications then first get a CompTIA security certification, along with an Information Security Fundamentals and Security Essentials certification. Once you get obtain these, get certified in Systems Security. Other certifications that can help you move up in your company include Certified Information Security Manager and Certified Information Systems Security.
Make sure you get the proper training before you take any of these tests to get certified. Even if you have worked in the cyber security field for a long time, there may be information you do not know. There are classes that you can take in a classroom or online. You will be given practice tests to help you prepare properly
Talk with other cybersecurity professionals that are in higher positions to learn more about information security jobs. This will help you decide what would work best for you and your career.
